originally built in 1900 as the Grand Theatre.. In 1908 the establishment became the Woolwich Hippodrome, for London Theatres of Varieties Ltd. Frank Matcham made alterations for music-hall use, in other words variety shows twice nightly. There was a bioscope room by 1914 and the place was a full-time cinema by 1923 when an organ was installed.. The theatre was demolished in 1939 to be replaced by the Regal cinema

1910-1912 Wellington street postcard
This early shot shows the London & Provincial bank on the right, which later became Barclays and in recent years sadly ended up as one of the many betting shops in Woolwich.. On the left is Furlongs Furniture store.. In the late 50s this was rebuilt as Thames house and Dagenham motors occupied the ground floor.. Later this became Woolwich motors ( I bought a Datsun Bluebird here ) and has also been a branch of Fads and World of leather before becoming Wetherspoons pub, the Great Harry in 2000..
