This picture was taken in 1980, which was a really lucky shot, because demolition of this corner commenced during that same year.. The building was originally built in 1880-81, as "The Duke of Connaught Coffee tavern and Royal assembly rooms" . In later years the upper hall had various uses... Cinema, Billiards hall, Bingo hall.. and probably a few more. [chris]

In this picture it looks as though the shop is still trading despite the crash .. Gellers sausage shop is now the Blue nile cafe

This old Pub stands on the corner of what is now General Gordon square.. This corner is where you would now stand and wait to cross the road toward Tesco
