Listed buildings in Woolwich and Plumstead
This is my project for 2016 . Dont expect to see too much here for a while. There are three grades of listed building, Grade 1 is the most important and as far as I know we only have one of these in Woolwich . The Royal brass foundry in the Arsenal, built around 1716 . Grade II* is next and we have about a dozen of these ..
I will concentrate on those for the time being
The Royal Brass foundry Woolwich Arsenal
The grade 1 listed brass cannon foundry was built around 1716-17 , possibly by Sir John Vanbrugh.. Then extended and altered in 1771-74 by mster founder Jan Verbruggen. Historic England number 1078956
89 to 91 Genesta road Plumstead.
A Grade 2* terrace of four house built in 1933-34 by architect Berthold Lubetkin. Historic England number 1247069
Woolwich foot tunnel entrance.
Grade II listed .. designed by Sir Maurice Fitzmaurice and opened in October 1912.
St Nicholas church , Plumstead
A grade 2* listed building . A church has existed here for over 1000 years . the current building consists of parts from various historic periods and was damaged by one of the last V2 bomb to fall on London during WW2, which landed in the churchyard . Historic England number 1211745
St mary Magdalene church , Woolwich .
This grade 2* listed church was built in the first half of the 18th century, by deptford builder Matthew Spray .. It is believed a church has been on or near this site since the 9th century. Historic England number 1358969
